I have been involved with the Calgary basketball scene for approximately thirty years. During that time I have had the pleasure of coaching young athletes from the ages of four years to twenty years of age; both males and females. This has taken place in a variety of environments. At the elementary school age I was heavily involved with the Calgary Minor Basketball Association, coaching teams within the Lake Bonavista community. At the Junior High age, I was fortunate to teach and coach at St. Bonaventure Junior High as I was employed by the Calgary Catholic School District. My professional evolution allowed me the opportunity to coach basketball (and volleyball) at Bishop Grandin, Bishop O’Byrne and Bishop Carroll high schools. Depending on the needs of the specific school, and my own interests, the coaching roles included stints as both a head and assistant coach. I have coached with CYDC in the past and have found club president John Hegwood to be extremely dedicated with building a top tier club system in the city of Calgary.
My first degree is a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education which has provided me a strong foundation when interacting effectively with young athletes. I have stayed active, trying to become a better coach, by participating in a variety of coaching clinics here in Alberta and South of the border. A coach should not be solely focused on improving a player’s basketball skills but also assisting them on their journey to become better, overall human being.
The game of basketball has significantly evolved in the past ten years. The priority of players, especially young ones trying to enhance their games in the off season (club season), is to develop their skill sets. This too should be the priority for coaches assisting them with their journey to become more complete players.
